How can acupuncture help for migraine

The research

A recent study involving 4985 people shows evidence that acupuncture reduces the frequency of migraine attacks, and it may has the similar effect with preventive medications. The frequency of headache is dropped by 50% or more in up to 59% of individuals receiving acupuncture and this effect can persist for more than 6 months.

The patient's experience

“ Following 30+years of migraine medications, prescribed by specialists, and the debilitating side effects, I decided to try a healthier treatment. Since the new year I stopped all migraine meds to begin acupuncture treatment. Presently after 7 treatments and following suggested exercises, the migraines were nonexistent and minimal, manageable mild headaches.… If you also want to break free from migraine or headache medications, I strongly recommend acupuncture treatment.”-Marie

“I have done acupuncture before both in Toronto and in Shanghai. ….is an exceptional acupuncturist and he cured my migraines and insomnia. Highly recommend. Over 5 family and friends have gone to  be treated with excellent results.” -Susan.

How does it work

According to TCM theory, pain is because of blockage of meridians. Acupuncture helps to open the blockage and keep the energy flow (called “qi”) along the meridians. An acupuncturist inserts needles at specific acupuncture points, usually along a person’s back or neck or hands and feet, sometimes on the belly button, where they can break the blockage. Sometimes, a gentle head massage and manipulation accompanies the placement of the needles. Treatment takes about an hour, and patients are advised to undergo at least six sessions, usually once a week. The acupuncturist may also suggest dietary changes. For example: no coffee, no cold drinks or cold food.

My experience

As an Acupuncturist at TG Wellness Clinic in Mississauga, I treat all kinds of chronic pain conditions daily. Precise assessment and proper acupuncture points chosen are the keys of success of treatment. Most of time, if the right point is chosen, the migraine onset stops right after the insertion of only one needle. For long run, posture correction and life style change are the other keys to get rid of the migraine.

According to the evidence based research, acupuncture is an effective treatment for anxiety. In 2017, The Acupuncture Evidence Project, co-authored by Dr John McDonald, PhD and Dr Stephen Janz 1, was published, providing an up-to-date comparative review of the clinical and scientific evidence for acupuncture treatment for anxiety. Which find that acupuncture is moderately effective in treating anxiety according to high level evidence.2. In 2016, a systematic review with over 400 randomised patients that concluded that ‘the effects from acupuncture for treating anxiety have been shown to be significant as compared to conventional treatments.3. Other studies, which included 120 randomized patients, found that acupuncture had a good effect on reducing anxiety and depression compared to conventional treatment involving pharmalogical approaches and psychotherapy, with over twice the reduction in symptoms.4.

More recent study shows acupuncture is more effective than pharmacotherapy and comparable to talking therapy, making it a helpful referral choice.

Acupuncture helps to stop vertigo instantly

Vertigo is a symptom of dizziness and blurred vision, and of an illusion sense of rotation and movement. It is classified as either constant vertigo or paroxysmal vertigo. In mild cases, vertigo may be eliminated after lying down with the eyes closed. In severe cases, patients feel a constant rotating and gyrating motion as if sitting in a sailing boat or a moving vehicle, so that it is difficult to stand upright, which is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. If the condition worsens, it may be accompanied by other symptoms and recurrent attacks.

Vertigo is frequently seen in diseases such as hypertension, cereriosclerosis, anemia, neurosis, aural vertigo and kinesia in western medicine.

The cause of vertigo is related to emotional disturbance, preference for greasy and sweet foods, and excessive over-exertion. Emotional depression may result in qi stagnation which transfers into fire, and then causes a stirring-up of wind-yang; that results in irritability, anger, and violent hyperactivity of the liver-yang, which then disturbs the cleart orifices. Preference for greasy and sweet foods may result in dysfunction of the spleen's ability to transfer and transport, leading to accumulation and obstruction of phlegm-dampness in the interior, which may later cause failure of the clear-yang to ascend. Instead, the turbid-phlegm is misted upwards into the clear orifices. Congenital weakness or constitutional weakness after prolonged illness may result in insufficiency of qi and blood, causing malnutrition of the clear orifices. Excessive overstrain may consume the kidney-essence, causing the brain and marrow to be malnourished. Either one of the above causes may lead to the occurrence of vertigo.

The pattern of hyperactivity of the liver-yang may be accompanied by restlessness and irritability, a bitter taste in the mouth, tinnitus, red tongue with yellow coating and a wiry pulse. The pattern of obstruction of phlegm-dampness in the interior may be accompanied by heaviness of the head as if it was wrapped, oppression in the chest and nausea, a fat tongue with a white greasy coating, and a soggy and slippery pulse. The pattern of kidney-essence deficiency may be accompanied by soreness and weakness in the loin and knees, seminal emission, light-colored tongue and a deep, thready pulse.

The pattern of qi and blood deficiency may be accompanied by lassitude and debilitation, sallow complexion, light-colored tongue and a thready pulse.

Remarks

Acupuncture has a good therapeutic effect for vertigo. The treatment of primary diseases should be considered as well. For the paroxysm of vertigo, it is advisable to instruct patients to close their eyes and calmly lie on their backs. If vertigo is accompanied by vomiting, the vomit should be prevented from entering the trachea. For patients whose vertigo is caused by phlegm-dampness, spicy and greasy foods should be reduced as much as possible.

What is Navel acupuncture ?

About Navel acupuncture

Navel acupuncture, the revolutionary modality, was established in 2000 by internationally renowned Master of I- Ching (YiJing) medicine, Professor Yong Qi. It is rooted in I-Ching philosophy, and thousands of clinical trials in China have proven its astonishing clinical efficacy. Its underpinnings and applications date back to principles that precede traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) or, for that matter, any other kind of medicine. Its advantages are being "simple, effective, practical, and extreme high efficacy".

Navel acupuncture inserts a few needles in navel area that has traditionally been forbidden to puncture, around the modest belly button. A well-skilled and trained navel acupuncturist can address all health disorders ranging from simple muscle pain to conditions that involve organ dysfunctions and changes in the tissues. It is especially convenient for pain management and relief.

In the acupuncture clinic in Mississauga, Acupuncturist X. Guo had been fully trained in China by professor Yong Qi in year 2019. Navel Acupuncture technique has been applied to many patients ever since. Tremendous effective on digestive system disorders, women reproductive system issues including fertility boost and mood related problems such as depression, anxiety and stress relief has been proven.

Acupuncture can help with chronic Knee pain

A couple of days ago, after I treated a patient with knee pain, her anterior tilted pelvic was also been fixed as a “side effect”. Because I didn’t work on the muscles around the pelvic such as the hip flexors and gluteal muscles, and I didn’t push or pull the pelvic bones also. What I did was when I treated the knee pain condition, I worked on the quadriceps and hamstrings and matched the knee joint bone position properly.

This case tells us the truth: many posture conditions are not caused by tight or weak muscles. Try to fix the bad posture by loosing the tight muscle or strengthening the weak muscle is useless. We all know that bad posture cause chronic pain. So by working on the tight muscles to treat chronic pain is also not a good approach.

Our body change the posture to balance pressure we received to the whole body or to avoid to put more pressure on some pain spot of the body. Like this knee pain case, her anterior pelvic tilt was not caused by short hip flexors or weak gluteal muscles. It was just because she has knee pain, her body changed the posture to feel better.

Of cause, not only knee pain would cause this, low back pain causes pelvic anterior tilt also. In this case, if just by treating the tight muscle to correct the pelvic tilt, the low back pain would not be fixed, sometimes it might get even worse.

The right way to assess the pelvic tilt condition is to check other parts of the body first to see if there was any injury before, any knee joint pain, ankle joint pain or misalignment and hypomobility. Then you can find the real reason of the bad posture. By treating the real cause, fix the chronic pain condition and bad posture is expected.

In our clinic, TG Wellness Clinic, the effective of the acupuncture treatment for knee pain is remarkable. Call to book now to have a consultation.

Visceral Fascia Manipulation Therapy (Abdominal massage)

Fascial manipulation therapy is a form of soft tissue therapy intended to relieve pain and increase your range of motion and some internal dysfunction.

To understand what fascial manipulation is and why it works, you have to understand a little about fascia. Fascia is a thin connective tissue that covers all the organs of the body and every muscle and every fiber within each muscle.

When muscle fibres or organs are injured, the fibres and the fascia which surround it become short and tight.  If there was surgery in abdominal cavity leading to scar tissue forming, which will contract to tight the fasical covers the organs in the abdominal cavity. This uneven stress can be transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body, causing pain and symptoms like back strain, cervical pain, dizziness, carpal tunnel syndrome, abdominal pain and even other more complicated internal dysfunction symptoms.

Fascial manipulation treats these symptoms by releasing the uneven tightness in injured fascia.

In this massage therapy, the area of tightness is located, then a light stretch is applied and the tissue relaxation is expected. This process is repeated until the area is fully relaxed, and then the next area is treated.

Fascial manipulation is a technique used to equalize the fascial tension throughout the body. Uneven fascial tension can compress nerves and muscles causing pain. Some of the positive effects you should notice include a decrease in pain and an improvement in your overall posture. Abdominal fascial manipulation treats related internal dysfunctions. If you had abdominal surgery or tense tummy, most likely abdominal fascial manipulation is suit for you.

In our acupuncture clinic in Mississauga, abdominal massage is used when assessment tells that deep fascial could be the cause of the condition. It is mostly applied to patients with digestive system issues and reproductive system problems, or post abdominal surgery with chronic pain conditions. If you have similar condition mentioned above, contact us at our acupuncture clinic in Mississauga to have a consultation. We are here to help you.

What is Moxibustion ?

Moxibustion  is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy which consists of burning dried mugwort (moxa) on specific points on the body. Moxibustion and acupuncture together called ZhenJiu in Chinese. It has been used in China and other Asian countries for a long time.  Practitioners usually store the mugwort for many years and grind it up to a fluff; they burn the fluff or process it further into a cigar-shaped stick. They can use it indirectly, with acupuncture needles, or burn it on the patient's skin directly

.There are several methods of moxibustion, including direct scarring, direct non-scarring, and indirect moxibustion. Direct scarring moxibustion places a small cone of moxa on the skin at an acupuncture point and burns it until the skin blisters, which then scars after it heals. Direct non-scarring moxibustion removes the burning moxa before the skin burns enough to scar, unless the burning moxa is left on the skin too long. Indirect moxibustion holds a cigar made of moxa near the acupuncture point to heat the skin, or holds it on an acupuncture needle inserted in the skin to heat the needle. Some other indirect ways are burn the moxa on a piece of ginger or salt or some other type of material made from herbs which separate the skin from the burning moxa.

Then effects of Moxibustion include warming up the regions and meridian points then stimulating circulation through the points and inducing a smoother flow of blood and qi. It can treat conditions associated with the "cold" or "yang deficiencies" in Chinese Medicine. Moxibustion mitigates against cold and dampness in the body. It is very good for chronic conditions.

What is Tuina massage?

Tuina is a form of Chinese therapeutic massage. 'Tui' meaning to push and 'Na' to grasp.

Tuina is an important component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) alongside with acupuncture and herbals. However, Tuina not only does it work on muscle groups, joints, sites of pain and poor circulation, but it works the same meridians and points used in acupuncture and employs the same basic theory as TCM: "Injury or disease causes blockages in the channels of the body. Blockages cause pain." Tuina removes the blockage Qi then treat the disease.

In China, Tuina practitioners treat conditions that, in the West, would be treated by osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists or with drugs. Tuina can and should also be used as a preventative form of treatment to maintain health and prevent accumulation of stress, disease and injury.

What can Tuina treat?

Tuina massage offers a wide range of benefits, both physiological as well as psychological, increasing well-being. Tuina speeds up the bodies ability to heal it self. Tuina massage can be used for a variety of purposes, from general massage to sports injuries. It can be used to treat a variety of ailments:

What can I expect from Tuina?

Tuina is performed over your clothed body. Patients sit on a chair or lie on a table. Tuina is a medical treatment and as with all TCM modalities, a case history and diagnosis will be done prior to treatment. Some techniques performed may be familiar to you. The massage is usually done using gentle to quite firm pressure using palms, thumbs, fingers, and elbows, added to this are various stretches. It can be more vigorous than other forms of massage. As with other body therapies you may leave a little sore, light-headed or supercharged after your treatment, but mostly patients always feel better after Tuina. Ointments, herbal compresses and cupping maybe applied as an additional benefit to your personnel treatment.

What is Gua Sha ?

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped to produce light bruising. Practitioners believe gua sha releases unhealthy elements from injured areas and stimulates blood flow and healing. Gua sha is sometimes referred to as "spooning" or "coining" by English speakers. It has been used in China and other Asian countries for thousands years.

Practitioners tend to follow the tradition they were taught to obtain sha: typically using either gua sha or cupping. The techniques are sometimes used together. In China, they are widely available from national and public hospitals to private massage shops, because of local people's deep trust to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and reasonable price, they are very popular.

Gua Sha treatment, like acupuncture, helps to stimulate the Chi (Qi) which is the body’s essential life force energy. There is a saying that where Qi goes, blood flows. So as the scraping contacts Qi it also creates a rush of blood flow, thereby creating a raised red rash, also known as petechiae. The redness will subside in a few days. Many people find immediate relief to their pain. For those using this treatment for asthma, breathing difficulties, or blocked congestion, Gua Sha may be useful for prevention -- not just treatment. Gua Sha is often practiced by acupuncturists and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners/doctors.

How Does Cupping Therapy Work?

Cupping is a therapy in which a jar is attached to the skin surface by negative pressure created by introducing flame into the cup or some other means of suction so as to form a localized congestion or blood stagnation to prevent or treat certain disease / condition.

Cupping can free channels of the body and promote qi and blood circulation, leading to relieve swelling and pain, dispel wind and cold.

Traditional Fire Cup or Modern Pump Cup

For fire cupping, your therapist will put a flammable substance such as alcohol, herbs, or paper in a cup and set it on fire.It creates a vacuum as the fire goes out, he then puts the cup upside down on your skin. This causes your skin to rise and redden as your blood vessels expand. The cup is generally left in place for up to 10 minutes.

A more modern version of cupping uses a hand pump instead of fire to create the vacuum inside the cup.

Sometimes therapists walk the cup on your skin which they can move from place to place on your skin for a massage-like effect.

Conditions which cupping can treat:

  • Arthritis caused by wind cold dampness

  • Acute sprain or strain

  • common cold

  • cough

  • asthma

  • indigestion

  • stomach ache

  • vertigo

  • headache

  • abdominal pain

  • dysmenorrhea

  • eczema

  • muscle ache

  • Mild discomfort

  • Blisters
