How can acupuncture help fertility?

Infertility refers to the inability to conceive after two or more years of a normal sexual life without contraception; or the inability to conceive for more than two years after giving birth to a baby or an abortion without using any contraceptive measures. The former is primary infertility, and the latter is secondary infertility. It is usually caused by diseases such as salpingitis, ovaritis, inflammation of the endometrium, cervicitis and disorders of the endocrine system in western medicine.
Male infertility is caused by hypospermia, azospermatism, necrospermia, uncolliquation of semen, anejaculation and retrogressive spermatism. Due to these physical problems, the female fails to get pregnant via normal intercourse for a period of greater than 2 years without using any contraceptive method.

Male infertility is related to the heart, liver, spleen, and especially to the kidney. Kidney-essence deficiency, vital energy and blood insufficiency, qi-stagnantion and blood stasis, and the downward flow of damp-heat can cause scanty, feeble, thin or stagnated semen, resulting in male infertility.

Common acupuncture points for male infertility treatment are shenshu (BL 23), Guanyuan (CY 4), Ciliao (BL 32), Zhibian (BL54), and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). How does acupuncture helps with male infertility? This is why? Shenshu (BL 23), Ciliao (BL 32) and Zhibian (BL 54) are located in the lumbar area and the sacrum, and are selected to nourish the kidney to replenish essence. Guanyuan (CY4), located on the Conception Vessel, regulates the Penetrating and Conception Vessels. Sanyinjiao (SP 6), a Crossing Point of the three yin channels of the foot, invigorates the spleen to resolve dampness and remove stagnation, soothes the liver and regulates qi to remove blood stasis, and tonifies the kidney and regulates the Penetrating and Conception Vessels.

For female, Acupuncture helps to strengthen ovarian function to yield higher quality of eggs; to regulate hormones for increased production of follicles; to increase blood supply to the uterus and to increase the thickness of the endometrium of uterus; to reduce the side effects of IVF medication; to prevent recurring miscarriages; to reduce anxiety and stress.

For male, acupuncture would be able to improve sperm count, motility, morphology and to reduce sperm DNA fragmentation.
