Constipation could be eased by acupuncture treatment

Constipation refers to difficulty defecating with a production of dry and impacted stools, or even lack of defecation for over 3 or 4 days. Constipation is mainly caused by the disturbed transmitting function of the large intestine. Constipation is very common nowadays. Acupuncture provides another alternative method without side effect for constipation. Acupuncture can nourish qi and blood for intestine which eventually promotes the bowel movement.

Most common used acupuncture or acupressure points are:
Tianshu (ST 25), Zhigou (TE 6), Shuidao (ST 28), Guilai (ST29), and Fenglong (ST 40).

Tianshu (ST 25), the Front-Mu Point of the large intestine, is applied to promote the flow of qi in the large intestine, and then transmission can be regained when the qi of the fu-organ flows smoothly. Zhigou (TE 5) can promote the flow of qi in
the triple energizer. When the qi in the triple energizer is in normal circulation, the qi of the fu-organ will circulate freely. The combination of the points, Shuidao (ST 28), Guilai (ST 29) and Fenglong (ST 40), regulate the spleen and stomach, disperse stagnation and promote qi circulation of the fu-organs.

Some other acupuncture or acupressure points could be chosen:

  • Hegu (LI 4) and Neiting (ST 44) to the pattern of heat accumulation;

  • Taichong (LR 3) and Zhongwau (CV 12) to qi stagnation;
