What is Gua Sha ?

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped to produce light bruising. Practitioners believe gua sha releases unhealthy elements from injured areas and stimulates blood flow and healing. Gua sha is sometimes referred to as "spooning" or "coining" by English speakers. It has been used in China and other Asian countries for thousands years.

Practitioners tend to follow the tradition they were taught to obtain sha: typically using either gua sha or cupping. The techniques are sometimes used together. In China, they are widely available from national and public hospitals to private massage shops, because of local people's deep trust to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and reasonable price, they are very popular.

Gua Sha treatment, like acupuncture, helps to stimulate the Chi (Qi) which is the body’s essential life force energy. There is a saying that where Qi goes, blood flows. So as the scraping contacts Qi it also creates a rush of blood flow, thereby creating a raised red rash, also known as petechiae. The redness will subside in a few days. Many people find immediate relief to their pain. For those using this treatment for asthma, breathing difficulties, or blocked congestion, Gua Sha may be useful for prevention -- not just treatment. Gua Sha is often practiced by acupuncturists and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners/doctors.
